Creating a Museum Kiosk
with a Single iPad
Client:
Golden History Museum
Project:
An easy to use iPad Museum Kiosk to enchance an exhibit
Objective:
Golden History Museum wanted to enhance visitor engagement by introducing an interactive kiosk. However, their tight project deadline meant they needed a simple, easy to use solution that could still provide a complementary experience.
Challenge
The museum needed an interactive kiosk that:
1. Used a single device to display exhibit content effectively.
2. Fit within a tight deadline.
3. Was easy to maintain and update fast.
4. Complemented a very important exhibit at the museum.
Solution
Hardware and Accessibility: We opted for a single iPad as the kiosk device due to its affordability, versatility, and built-in Guided Access mode, which locks the device into a specific app or browser. This ensured visitors could interact with the content without navigating away or tampering with settings. The iPad was securely mounted in a tamper-proof stand, positioned at an accessible height for all visitors.
Design Approach
We created a clean, intuitive presentation for the kiosk with:
• Touch-friendly web design.
• High-contrast visuals and bold fonts for readability.
• Optimization for fast, seamless browsing on the iPad.
Cost Management
To stay within the museum’s budget, we:
• Utilized our studio’s web hosting.
• Built a simple website with design materials provided by the exhibit's designer.
• Repurposed existing museum media to avoid new content production costs.
